Sherman Ernest Young, 78, of Summersville finished his earthly journey on May 8, 2024 after a brief illness. Born on October 16, 1945 at Gad, WV, he was the son of the late Frank and Cleva Roberts Hypes. He was preceded in death by brothers Gene and Larry; sisters Sharon, Deanna, Patty and Carol; and daughter Melissa Hall.

Sherman was a U.S. Army veteran and was a jack-of-all-trades, having many occupations throughout his life, including time at Union Carbide, UPS, the Army Corps of Engineers and his own construction business. He was also an avid gardener in his later years and with the growing season upon us, he always loved to raise and give away what he had grown to his family and friends.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Brenda Sue Young; children Darin (Sharon) Young of Thomasville, NC, Kandie (Neils) Schmidt of Summersville, Adam Young of Summersville, and Matthew (Kaitlyn) Young of Ft. Bragg, NC.; sisters Sylvia Caverlee of Fayetteville and Donna Moore of Summersville; and brother Lanty Hypes of Tipton.

Ten grandchildren, Jessica Reese; Darin, Melissa and Brittney Young; Megan Dunn, Michael and Mason Ceney; and Alivia, Owen, and Alec Young. Great-grandchild Brenleigh Walton and great-nephew Trey Stump (who always called him papaw). He loved being a papaw and his grandchildren brought him great pride and joy.
