Obituary

CLYDE  DALE  "YOGI"  McCLUNG,  89 years of age of Canvas, went home to be with the Lord Monday February 10,2025. He was the son of the late Daniel Owen and Clara Lydia Dooley McClung and was born at Mt. Nebo September 29,1935. Dale was the chief engineer and land manager for Peerless Eagle and Green Valley Coal Companies. He began working at Peters Creek Coal Company in 1954, which became Peerless Eagle in 1975. He retired after 44 years in 1998. Dale wasn't very good at retirement and went back to work three different times. He was 82 years old at his final retirement.

Dale was a Christian, member and trustee of the Mt. View Church at Canvas. He was the engineer for the construction of the NCHS football stadium, a charter member of the Canvas Ruritan Club and a U.S. Army veteran. Dale was the elementary basketball and Little League baseball coach for Canvas Grade School for many years. When his grandson Brandon was four years old, he began coaching again and helped his son-in-law Greg coach from tee ball through senior league. He served as the Safety Director for the Summersville Little League Board of Directors and was selected as the Grand Marshall for the opening day parade, where he had the honor of throwing out the first pitch.

He always looked forward to summer. Dale began planting seeds in the spring to get ready for his huge garden. He was best known for his beautiful tomatoes. Dale was a giver and loved to share his produce with many. He taught gardening skills to friends and family and was so proud when his great granddaughter Brynnelee won first place for her potatoes at the Nicholas County Potato Festival. Deer season was an all-time favorite, and he enjoyed elk hunting in Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes Marie Tyree McClung in 2017, who he dated for five weeks and were married for 59 years. He was also preceded in death by three sisters: Merle Spinks, Oda Bowling and Ardith Groves.
